Come and find me on Substack

It’s a challenging time to be an independent journalist in a Western democracy, not least because of a general trend towards authoritarianism. There are too many media platforms, and too many posts, that it is tough to cut through the noise. Too many of our media outlets are compromised by corporate and political interest, and run by powerful algorithms that favour certain content over others. The demands of the 24/7 “always on” culture, plus dwindling resources to support independent journalism, requires a resourcefulness and agility that is burdensome and can easily lead to burn out. But at the same time, independent journalism is more crucial than ever.

My main focus is on creating thought provoking, long form content. If someone watches one of my films and finds themselves thinking about it in the days and weeks that follow then, to my mind, it has been successful. I don’t have solutions to the myriad of world problems we face today, but I hope my films can condense down issues that I have spent hundreds of hours studying and witnessing so that the people who watch the films can reflect on the layers, and the nuances, and come to their own conclusions. Our over-reliance on short messaging and headlines is dangerous. It is also understandable, because in a world that is over saturated with information, where do you begin to stay on top of it all?

So I’ve decided to focus my energies on making my documentaries and posting thought pieces on Substack from time to time. I won’t be blogging on my own website any more because it takes yet more time, but please do come and find me on Substack.
